Protection Coordinator


CHILD SAFEGUARDING: Level 3 - the responsibilities of the post may require the post holder to have regular contact with or access to children or young people
ROLE PURPOSE:  The Child Protection Coordinator will provide overall technical guidance, support and strategic direction to the Child Protection in Emergencies works currently being implemented by Jordan Country programmes.
Assess, design and guide staff to initiate interventions to address violations of children’s rights to protection from abuse, exploitation, violence and neglect. The Child Protection coordinator is responsible for ensuring that quality programs are initiated and capacities developed to provide these kinds of protection to children.
SCOPE OF ROLE: 
Reports to: child protection specialist
Country Dimensions: Save the Children works in all 12 Governorates in Jordan with a current staff complement of approximately 347 staff and current expenditure of approximately $4 million each year

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:
Support the delivery of effective Programmes, in both development and humanitarian contexts, by:
  • Provide technical support to the field teams through regular field visits to ensure child protection activities are appropriately implemented according to quality standards.
  • Work with child protection partners to assess needs or, coordinate and oversee needs assessments being conducted by partners about child protection issues, to map out priority protection gaps and identify key resources and assets utilising Child Protection in Emergency (CPiE) Rapid Assessment tools
  • Support the ongoing referral systems amongst the different program interventions (child protection, education, psychosocial, child poverty , food security, health  etc.) in camps
  • Ensure that child protection interventions are informed by and integrated with other core sectors of health, nutrition, food security and child poverty.
  • Ensure that community based Child Protection Committees (CbCPC) are established and strengthened by: ensuring CPCs set and follow their action plans; linking CPCs with other existing committees; and, identify areas of needed training and support for CPC members..
  • Initiate and/or carry out capacity-building of key staff in specific child protection in emergencies competencies including appropriate child protection approaches, psychosocial support; and, provide ongoing support and mentoring to staff as they implement where needed.
  • Establish community based processes and mechanisms in the refugee to support the identification, monitoring and response to the care and protection concerns of children, including in the longer term if appropriate. To the extent possible, children’s participation should be included.
  • Lead in to technical guidance on the programme activities supporting the psychosocial (physical, social, emotional) wellbeing of children and their families at the different protection centre within camps
  • Design and initiate an inter-agency community based intervention to prevent and respond to gender-based violence (GBV) using the principles and approaches of the Inter Agency Steering Committee (IASC) guidelines.
  • Ensure impacted children are provided with psychosocial support programs to assist them, including the establishment and strengthening of “different protection centres  ” within camps.
  • Ensure that safeguarding standards are understood and met
  • Compile quantitative and qualitative updated data in collaboration with the MEAL team.
  • In coordination with the Child Protection team members, support regular participatory activities with different groups of children to identify issues affecting children in their communities, and assist the teams to develop appropriate responses.
  • Compile and document all the related technical issues such as (successes, challenges and lesson learned ..etc.)
  • Ad hoc translation of CP resources, like brochures, fact sheets from English to Arabic.
  • Ensure the representation of Save the Children Jordan as CP and right-based organization in Inter-Agency coordination meetings and national WG when needed, Within the camps
  • Undertakes any other tasks assigned by line manager / supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Essential:
  • University degree in Child Protection, Social Work or any relevant area
  • Substantial experience in the field of child protection for more than 3 years
  • Ability to identify the main gaps in child protection in the given context to inform a holistic response for children.
  • Commitment to and understanding of child rights, Save the Children’s aims, values and principles and humanitarian standards as Sphere Charter and Code of Conduct.
  • Good knowledge of and experience in using established inter-agency standards and guidelines in child protection, SC Child Friendly Spaces Handbook.
  • Experience in capacity building and in strengthening various duty bearers understanding of and response to child protection.
  • Self-awareness and proven ability to operate successfully in different cultural environments.
  • Ability to achieve results and maintain consistent high standards of professional behaviour and achievement, including when working alone.
  • Good leadership and team member skills, including the ability to be part of and organize, support, manage and develop a team.
  • Ability to communicate and maintain appropriate and productive relations with a range of actors, including children, parents, local and national authorities in political and militarily sensitive environments.
  • Experience of working with partners and a participatory approach
  • Ability to manage stress, flexible and accommodating in difficult and frustrating working circumstance.
  • Computer literate.
