Engineering Intern

INTERNSHIP TITLE: Engineering Intern
INTERN WORKSITE LOCATION: Based in Amman – Jordan, with regular visits to field sites
DATES OF INTERNSHIP:  January 2018 – June 2018
LENGTH OF INTERNSHIP: 6 Months

For the duration of this internship assignment the intern will receive:
  • In Country travel related to this Internship from MC office to field locations
  • Work space in MC office, a laptop and phone.

PROGRAM/DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:
Mercy Corps (MC) is a non-profit, voluntary humanitarian aid agency, registered in the United States and Scotland with offices in more than 40 countries around the world. Mercy Corps has been addressing the humanitarian needs in Jordan through a diverse portfolio of development and relief programs for the past 12 years. Due to the current humanitarian crisis related to the continual influx of refugees from bordering Syria, Mercy Corps is expanding its emergency programming as well as development programs supporting  Jordan’ government and host communities.
GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:
The Engineering Department is a support department that manages and provides the technical oversight of Mercy Corps projects focusing on municipal water systems and other civil projects in Jordan.
Mercy Corps programs in Jordan.  Among others, the intern-trainee will have the chance to interact with our Child Protection program funded by UNICEF in Azraq and Zaatari camps. Mercy Corps has established Child and Adolescent Friendly Spaces (CFS/AFSs), these spaces are crucial to provide opportunities for kids to play, learn, and receive social support creating safe and protective environment. In 2015, Mercy Corps will focus to improve the quality of the services provided to beneficiaries in order to help alleviate stress and anxiety. The Program will allocate significant resources to staff and volunteers working directly with beneficiaries while building their capacity to ensure that they are maximizing impact during the time they spend in our facilities. 
He/ She will also interact with the No Lost Generation (NLG3) (CVE) program, Advancing Adolescents in Jordan. NLG activities in Jordan target vulnerable young people including adolescent boys and girls to be participants (12-19) and youth volunteers (20-34) in Adolescent Friendly Space (AFS) centers in high-risk communities. In Jordan and the program activities focus on reaching Syrian adolescents (50% of program beneficiaries) and host community adolescents by applying vulnerability criteria to both groups. Engaging diverse groups is a means of mitigating tensions and encouraging greater interaction between host community and refugees to build social capital and cohesion.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:  
Through the internship, the intern will acquire:
  • Full understanding of best practices in Engineering functions and policies and formats as well as donors regulations (USAID, EC, ECHO, DFID, UNICEF, and others) for the implementation of humanitarian projects.
  • On job training of project planning and operational support
  • Visits to field project sits and engagement in logistics and operational support related to program activities.

DELIVERABLES:
The intern is expected to provide support to the team in terms of:
  1. Work closely with Engineers and Site Inspectors.
  2. Coordinate Document Control activities relating to multiple projects in accordance with the Engineering Department Infrastructure procedures. This includes technical documents, drawings, and other correspondences.
  3. Assist in coordinating and filing documents using the required transmittal notes.
  4. Assist in keeping records of the Engineering Department staff/sick leaves and departure.
  5. Maintain updated records electronically of all approved documents and this may include scanning of hard copies
  6. Inspect works by contractors at the field.
  7. Prepare drawings and assist engineers in different types of works and assessments.
  8. Prepare estimation and quantity surveying if needed
  9. Assist in preparation of site documents, and follow up of all site document needs
  10. Be present and assist in undertaking document audits when required
  11. Assist in the preparation of reports and take minutes of meetings.
  12. Co-ordinate any other necessary administrative and office management details on behalf of the Engineering Manager as required


LIVING CONDITIONS:
Jordan is a Middle Eastern country with insufficient supplies of water, oil and other natural resources. Other challenges include budget deficit, poverty and unemployment. Amman, like any other city, is divided between the higher income population (west of Amman) where English is widely spoken, and the lower income population (East of Amman). Islam is if the official religion of the Kingdom, around 92% of the population is Muslim. People of Jordan are conservative; therefore decent clothing is essential especially in parts other than West of Amman. 
Mercy Corps interns and volunteers represent the agency both during and outside of work hours and are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and respect local laws, customs and MC's policies, procedures, and values at all times and in all in-country venues.
